Directors Desk What is Public Health About ODH
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, public health is "the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of a community, as by preventive medicine, health education, control of communicable diseases, application of sanitary measures, and monitoring of environmental hazards."

Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop summed up the importance of public health: "Health care is vital to all of us some of the time, but public health is vital to all of us all of the time."  Read more...
As the flagship of Ohio’s public health infrastructure, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) works with 130 local health departments to "protect and improve the health of all Ohioans."

ODH impacts Ohioans from cradle to grave – from helping provide pre-natal care, to issuing your birth certificate, to perhaps providing your first immunizations, to offering family planning information, to performing nursing home inspections to issuing your death certificate.
