As of mid-September, the Ottawa County Health Department received reports of more than 1,400 people who have a history of gastrointestinal illness and travel to South Bass Island; the latest date of onset being Tuesday, Sept. 7.
To help protect both residents of and visitors to South Bass Island, the Ohio Department of Health urges residents with wells to consider vigorously boiling their water for one minute before drinking, cooking, making prepared drinks or brushing teeth. Visitors to South Bass Island are urged to consider drinking only bottled water.
People who are sick after visiting South Bass Island should call the Ottawa County Health Department at 1-419-734-6800.
The Ohio Department of Health has a toll-free information line to answer questions regarding the outbreak of gastrointestinal illness involving residents and visitors to South Bass Island.
