2008 Healthy Ohio Community Profiles

Ohio is made up of 88 counties that share similarities but also have unique characteristics that set them, and the communities within them, apart from one another.  Consequently, the burden of disease and injury is not equally distributed across communities. To address this burden it will require a collaborative effort between primary care practitioners, public health officials, health planners and other decision makers concerned about community health.

Factors impacting a community’s disease and injury burden include socioeconomic status, access to health care, age distribution and lifestyle behaviors.  These factors can be used to:

  • Assess the critical health issues among Ohio residents and residents of each of Ohio's 88 counties.
  • Support program development including primary prevention and disease screening, particularly for chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes that will improve the overall health of the community.

These community profiles are designed to assist in data-based decision making to facilitate effective and efficient health planning.  Data in the profiles are presented by gender for the 80 non-urban counties and by race and gender for the eight urban counties (Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, Mahoning, Montgomery, Stark and Summit).  Data sources include Ohio birth and death certificates, Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System, Bureau of the Census, Ohio Department of Commerce and the Ohio Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.  Information in the profiles is provided for the following categories:

  • Demographics
  • Socioeconomic Status
  • Access to Health Care
  • Leading Causes of Death (Number of deaths and age-adjusted rates per 100,000 population)
  • Risk Factor Behaviors and Conditions
  • Heart Disease and Stroke

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Unintentional Injury Mortality
  • Intentional Injury Mortality
