HIV/STD Prevention Program

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH), HIV/STD Prevention Program, has the duty to identify, report, prevent, and control HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Ohio. These programs are dedicated to prevent the spread of HIV and other STDs while minimizing complications and costs.

The goals of the HIV/STD Prevention Program are to:

  1. Focus HIV prevention efforts in communities and local areas where HIV is most heavily concentrated to achieve the greatest impact in decreasing the risk of acquiring HIV.
  2. Increase HIV testing with populations at increased risk for infection.
  3. Increase awareness and educate communities through traditional and innovative techniques about the threat of HIV and how to prevent it.
  4. Increase access to care and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) by linking them to continuous and coordinated quality care.
  5. Increase the proportion of HIV-infected persons in Ohio who know they are infected.
  6. Reduce HIV-related disparities and promote health equity.
  7. Reduce the incidence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis and their respective sequelae.
  8. Improve the integration of STD services into clinical care across the healthcare system.
  9. Increase access to STD services for those populations most at-risk.
  10. Reduce the threats of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea, other emerging STDs, and congenital syphilis.

ODH's HIV, STD, Viral Hepatitis (VH), and Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention and Control Programs provides local health districts with capacity-building support and funding for prevention and control services.  Our mission is to advance the prevention and control of HIV, STDs, VH, and TB in Ohio.  Our vision is an Ohio in which the incidence of HIV, STDs, VH, and TB decreases every year.
