Animal Rabies Testing and Case Maps
Animal rabies testing is done by the Ohio Department of Health's Bureau of Public Health Laboratory. About 4,000 to 5,000 specimens are tested annually. If you are an agency sending in a rabies specimen, please review specimen submission guidelines so that samples arrive at the laboratory in satisfactory condition for testing. Specimens should be refrigerated, not frozen. Test results are reported to the submitting agency and the local health department. Rabies-positive animals are also reported to the Zoonotic Disease Program.
