Patient is (PIC)turing Pregnancy - Chronic Disease


  • Scope: Chronic disease is very common in the U.S. and for women of childbearing age.


Diabetes Mellitus: 5%

Heart Disease: 2%

Hypertension: 11%

More than 50% of women of childbearing age have one or more risks of developing chronic disease; most commonly, obesity.

  • Preconception Significance: As providers, the patient is both the mother and baby so be cautious as the medical conditions and treatments may affect the pregnant mother and her fetus differently.
    • Pregnancy may have an impact on the treatment for a medical condition in the mother. It could worsen or delay the treatment.
    • Certain diseases and the medications can be teratogenic.
  • Risk Identification Strategies: A thorough history is necessary to identify chronic disease and appropriate therapies for each woman of childbearing age.
