Undecided about Pregnancy - Genetic History

Your health is very important, whether you are planning to become pregnant in the next year or not. If you do not want to become pregnant, take steps to avoid pregnancy until you are ready. If you could become pregnant, please make sure you are healthy. Important growth of a fetus occurs in the first few weeks before a woman knows she is pregnant. Here are some key steps to follow:

  1. Take a multivitamin with folic acid every day (pill or chewable).

  2. Exercise regularly.

  3. Eat a variety of whole grains, vegetables and fruits and make sure meat, eggs, poultry and fish are fully cooked.

  4. Have regular medical and dental checkups.

  5. Don’t smoke or use illegal drugs.

  6. Avoid secondhand smoke and other toxic or harmful substances.

  7. Talk to your doctor about your family’s health history.

  8. Make sure you are up to date on your vaccinations.

  9. Talk to your doctor about all over the counter/prescription medications and supplements you take.

  10. If you are, or have been sexually active, learn how to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases

  11. Until you are ready to be pregnant, take steps to avoid pregnancy.

  12. If you are old enough to drink alcohol, limit yourself to one or two drinks daily.
