Undecided about Pregnancy - Family Planning and Contraception

50 percent of pregnancies are unplanned, but having a birth control method that is right for your needs is important so you only get pregnant when you are ready and want to.

Family Planning:

What is it?

  • Planning for the number of children you want and having them at appropriate times. Birth control aids in preventing pregnancies until you are ready. There are birth control methods for those who don’t want to get pregnant ever and for those who are just waiting to get pregnant.

  • If you are ready to get pregnant it is important that you are aware of your preconception health and change any habits that could be harmful to yourself or a future child during pregnancy.

  • Health and habits that should be considered in family planning are fitness, nutrition, substance use, mental health, relationship health, chronic and infectious disease history, up to date vaccinations and any previous pregnancy complications.

Recommendations:

  • It is recommended that you get tested for sexually transmitted infections and HIV status if you have been previously sexually active.

  • If you are not in a healthy state or not currently ready to be pregnant, find the correct birth control method to use until you are prepared for pregnancy.

  • There are several online family planning resources to use or you can see a health care provider to help you develop a plan. They will help you establish birth control use, healthy behaviors and counseling if necessary.
