PopulationsPopulation counts and estimates are used as denominators to create public health measures that are population-based. Many of the rates presented in the Health Statistics section of the Ohio Department of Health website are calculated per 1,000 or per 100,000 people in the population at risk for the health condition. Several sources for populations to use in health statistics calculations are presented here. Ohio and County Population Estimates Developer: The Ohio Department of Development, Office of Strategic Research provides data and analysis on the Economic, Industrial, and Demographic trends of the State of Ohio, its businesses and its people. Population estimates are provided for Ohio Counties at this website. Bridged-race estimates of the resident population, Ohio and Counties, 1990-2003 These population estimates result from bridging the multi-race categories used in the census 2000 counts to the older version of race groupings with four categories (white, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native). These estimates thus bridge the newer multi-race census files (used for denominators) to the older single-race format vital statistics counts (used for numerators) in rate calculations. These files are total populations by race by county and by year. For more detaled estimates by race, Hispanic ethnicity, gender, age, calendar year, and County please contact the office listed below. The Ohio Department of Health Public Health Data/Research Policy Advisory Committee is an advisory body to the Department for data collection, data analysis, and research activities. The Committee has developed data collection/storage and methodological standards to be used by ODH employees, which can be found here.
