Theodore E. Wymyslo, M.D.

Dr. Theodore “Ted” E. Wymyslo was appointed by Ohio Governor John R. Kasich to serve as the director of the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) on January 13, 2011. Dr. Wymyslo has worked in the field of primary health care as a family physician, administrator and educator for more than 30 years. As ODH director, Dr. Wymyslo works with Ohio’s 125 local health departments and public and private health partners across the state to improve the health and wellness of Ohio’s 11.5 million residents.

Prior to becoming the ODH director, Dr. Wymyslo served as the director of Family Medicine Dayton, a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) initiative. This initiative provides a structured method for ensuring that patients receive high quality care provided at the right time, by the right clinician and in the right setting.

A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Wymyslo completed the Family Practice Residency Program at Mount Carmel Medical Center. Upon graduation, he entered private practice and then served as medical director of the East Dayton Health Center in Dayton, Ohio.  From 1986 to 2008, he served both as program director of the Miami Valley Hospital Family Practice Residency Program and medical director of the Miami Valley Hospital Berry Family Health Center.  He is also an associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Dr. Wymyslo has received many awards and accolades in recognition of his professional and public service accomplishments. He was named the first recipient of the Miami Valley Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year Award in 2001. Additionally, he received the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Philanthropist of the Year Award in 2002, the American Academy of Family Physicians Philanthropist of the Year Award in 2003, and the AMA Foundation’s 2006 Pride in the Profession Award, as well as distinguished service awards from both the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and the Montgomery County Medical Society.  In 2009, he received the Torchlight Leadership Achievement Award from the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians.
