Training for hearing and vision screenings are offered in a number of ways:

Hearing and vision screener trainings are held at the State Library of Ohio located at 274 East First Avenue, Columbus. The trainings are comprised of informal lecture, discussion and hands-on training. There is no registration fee and 1.5 continuing education credits for nurses are given for each training session. Registration for the below dates and times is required, call 614-466-5332 or e-mail BCFHS@odh.ohio.gov to register.

Hearing trainings will comprise of:

  1. A brief review of basic anatomy of the ear and pediatric problems.
  2. Ohio Department of Health's (ODH) current hearing screening requirements for school-aged children (preschool will also be included).
  3. Proper technique for performing a hearing screening using a pure-tone audiometer.
  4. Hands-on training with pure-tone audiometer.

Tympanometry training is available upon request. Also, otoacoustic emission training will be available upon request offering 1.5 continuing education credits.

Vision trainings will comprise of:

  1. ODH's current vision screening requirements for school-aged children (preschool will also be included).
  2. Proper technique for performing vision screening methods for Distance Visual Acuity using letter/symbol charts; stereopsis testing using the Random Dot E and Alternate Cover Test; color vision testing using several color plate books.

No other vision equipment training will be included.

Regional conferences are held throughout Ohio each year. Hearing and vision screening guidelines are discussed, hands-on training is offered and hearing and vision personnel make formal presentations. Registration is required in order to attend a regional conference. Nursing continuing education credits are given to those who attend. If a group of at least 15 screeners can be assembled, ODH staff, time and resources permitting, will travel to and conduct training at a local site. The Ohio Department of Health (OH-011-0409) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
