Data and Statistics on Lead Poisoning - Children
Early intervention and educating the public about lead poisoning are instrumental in increasing prevention and are done by targeting high-risk zip codes. Through Lead Awareness Week, annual conferences, the launching of PLANET (Pediatric Lead Assessment NETwork), and billboard campaigns, OCLLP is reaching out to at risk populations, addressing lead and its effect on Ohio’s children.
According to 1999 statistics, Ohio has up to 2.7 million housing units containing some lead-based paint on interior and/or exterior surfaces. Over 1.5 million of these were built before 1950, and 36 percent of children under 6 years (315,000 children) live in these possibly hazardous homes. Annually, approximately 100,000 children from birth to 6 years of age are screened for lead poisoning and approximately 10 percent are found to have elevated blood lead levels. Current Data is available for each Ohio County.
