Community Health Care Facilities & Services

Through a program of regulatory oversight involving onsite surveys, inspections, and investigations, the Bureau of Community Health Care Facilities and Services serves and protects the consumers of health care providers (those who care for patients) and suppliers (those who furnish goods and services used in care and treatment) whose operations are not considered long term care. In addition to federally-certified provider/suppliers, the bureau has regulatory oversight responsibilities for: state-regulated hospital maternity units and the obstetrical/newborn services provided by an acute care hospital; residential group and family homes licensed as adult care facilities; and health insuring corporations pursuant to the access to care and the quality of care for members. To fulfill its mission, roles, and functions, the bureau is organized with a professional staff of surveyor/inspectors who hold licenses in the state of Ohio as a registered nurse, licensed social worker, or registered sanitarian, plus an administrative support staff. The bureau performs its roles and functions related to Medicare survey and certification as an agent of the federal government’s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) under the authority of section 1861 of the Social Security Act. The authority for state-related regulatory functions comes from the Ohio Revised Code.
