Maternity Homes

While hospitals are not licensed in Ohio, the maternity unit and newborn care nursery within a hospital are licensed by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) under the provisions of Chapter 3711 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC). Maternity units, newborn care nurseries, and maternity homes are subject to this statute and the rules that set the standards for operation are found at Chapter 3701-7 of the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC). These rules can be found at: /en/rules/final/3701-1 to -09/f3701-7.aspx

A maternity home is a residential facility for pregnant women where accommodations, medical care, counseling services, and educational and recreational opportunities are offered during the prenatal and postpartum periods. Maternity homes may provide nursery services for infants.
