Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/Ps)

The Primary Care Office assists communities that are interested in assessing whether they meet the federal definition of “medically underserved.”  This analysis includes computation of the Index of Medical Underservice for an area or population group.

The Index of Medical Underservice consists of four components:

  • The percentage of the population below poverty;
  • The percentage of the population that is elderly;
  • The infant mortality rate; and
  • The availability of primary care physicians.

Designation as a Medically Underserved Area or Medically Underserved Population (MUA/P) allows communities to pursue federal funding for a Federally Qualified Health Center.
