Black Lung Clinics Program

The Ohio Black Lung Clinics Program provides treatment and rehabilitation for individuals exposed to coal dust through current or former employment in the mining industry. Funds are distributed each year from the Ohio Department of Health to clinics that serve these individuals regardless of their ability to pay.

Services for Miners and Former Miners

Services for miners or former miners provided by funded clinics include:

  • Influenza and pneumonia immunizations
  • Physical reconditioning
  • Support group meetings
  • Social services
  • Transportation
  • Help with filing disability claims

Black Lung Clinics

Individuals can call the clinics listed below to schedule testing for black lung disease or to learn about other provided services. The clinics use a sliding fee scale based on 200 percent of federal poverty levels and accept Medicare, Medicaid and all forms of private insurance. No one will be denied service due to inability to pay.

Expectations of clinics receiving funding by the Black Lung Clinics Program include:

  • Outreach
  • Provision of primary care services (including screening, diagnosis and treatment)
  • Patient and family education and counseling (including anti-smoking education)
  • Patient care and coordination (including individual patient care plans for all patients and referrals as indicated)
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation

The Black Lung Clinics Program was authorized by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, as amended by the Black Lung Benefits Reform Act of 1977 (Pub. L. 95-239).
