Nurse Aide Training Competency (NATCEP)
Federal and state regulations establish training and testing requirements for all nurse aides who work in Medicare/Medicaid certified long term care facilities. The Ohio Department of Health's NATCEP unit is responsible for ensuring that the nurse aide, train the trainer and dining assistant programs offered in Ohio meet minimum federal and state requirements.
Approximately 447 Nurse Aide Training programs, 14 Train-the-Trainer programs and 275 Dining Assistant programs receive approval for their programs by the NATCEP unit. The unit oversees both the written competency exam and the clinical skills exam for all nurse aides. The NATCEP unit provides phone assistance to nurse aide programs, nurse aides seeking training and consumers wishing to start new programs.
Approximately 20,000 prospective nurse aides are tested each year. The Nurse Aide Registry currently has approximately 298,000 entries listed and more than 89,000 of those are active nurse aides.
