West Nile Virus Update
As of October 22, 2009 the Ohio Department of Health has tested 8,413 mosquito pools (278,677 mosquitoes) and 243 pools have been positive. There have been six horses tested and all were negative. There are two human cases in Ohio.

In 2008, there were 15 human cases in Ohio, including one fatality. There were 11,018 mosquito pools (389,062 mosquitoes) tested and 381 pools were positive. There were 98 birds tested for West Nile Virus and 14 were positive. There were also 29 horses tested and all were negative.
In 2007, there were 8,240 mosquito pools (252,195 mosquitoes) tested and 325 pools were positive. There were 115 birds tested and 22 were positive. There were 23 human cases, including three deaths. Of the 51 horses tested, two were positive.
In 2006, ODH tested 1,589 birds and 126 were positive for West Nile Virus. There were 15,300 mosquito pools (443,399 mosquitoes) tested with 909 positive pools. Twelve horses tested positive out of 37 submitted. There were 48 human cases in Ohio, including four fatalities.
In 2005, ODH tested 1,817 birds and found 84 positives. There were 1,373 positive mosquito pools out of 14,705 pools (390,010 mosquitoes) tested. There were 15 positive horses out of 84 tested. There were also 61 human cases, 2 of which were fatal. There were 16 blood donors whose blood tested positive for active West Nile Virus infection. All blood products were tested before distribution them to the public and donations that tested positive were destroyed. Two of the donors developed symptoms of WNV and are counted among the 61 cases for 2005.
In 2004, ODH tested 3,295 birds and found 106 positives. There were 874 positive mosquito pools out of 14,202 pools (403,632 mosquitoes) tested. Of 127 horses that were tested for WNV, 9 were positive. There were 12 human cases in Ohio, two of which were fatal.
In 2003, ODH tested 2,611 birds and 249 were positive. By the end of the year there were 489,286 mosquitoes tested for West Nile Virus with 799 positive pools of mosquitoes. There were 327 horses tested and 106 were positive. Five dogs tested positive, as well. The first human case was confirmed on July 18 in Fulton County. There were 108 human cases in Ohio, 24 of which were West Nile Fever and the remainder West Nile Encephalitis/Meningitis. Eight people died.
In 2002, ODH tested 5,152 dead and live birds. Among these, there were 1,002 birds with WNV. These positive birds include: blue jays, American crows and other birds. There were over 185,372 mosquitoes tested for West Nile Virus and 1,976 positive pools of mosquitoes were found. Of 1,308 horses tested by the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for WNV, 645 were positive and about one third have died or were euthanized. West Nile Virus was found in all 88 of Ohio's counties in 2002. The first two human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Ohio were reported on August 14, 2002, one from Cuyahoga County and one from Franklin County. For the entire year, there were 299 probable and 142 confirmed cases of WNV in Ohio, including 31 deaths.
In 2001, ODH tested 1,848 live birds. Among these, there were six birds with WNV from three counties. There were 942 dead birds submitted for testing to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Of these, 54 blue jays and 226 crows have tested positive. There were 91,590 mosquitoes tested for WNV and 26 positive pools of Culex sp. mosquitoes were found. Of 969 horses tested, all were negative. There were 274 humans tested at the Ohio Department of Health laboratory for West Nile Virus in Ohio and all were negative.
