Marinas

Overview

Marinas in Ohio are regulated under the authority of Chapter 3733. of the Ohio Revised Code and the rules specified in Chapter 3701-35 of the Ohio Administrative Code. A marina is defined as a boat basin that has docks or moorings for seven or more watercraft. The rules apply uniformly, throughout the state, affecting the location, development, operation, and maintenance of marinas to assure that such marinas provide adequate sanitary facilities for the watercraft using them and do not cause a nuisance or health hazard.

Services

  • Policy and procedural guidance to local health department administration and staff for the implementation of the marina regulatory program including inspection, operation and maintenance.
     
  • Explanation and interpretation of the standards relative to the layout, water supply, restroom facilities, sewage and waste disposal facilities, safety, and general sanitation of marinas.
     
  • Review and approval of marina plans to assure that adequate sanitary facilities are provided.
     
  • Periodic survey of local health department licensing programs to assure that such programs are being conducted in compliance with the Ohio Revised Code and the Ohio Administrative Code.
     
  • Administer the federal Clean Vessel Act Pumpout Grant Program to provide funding for the construction and/or renovation of marine pumpout and dump station facilities.
     
  • Clearinghouse functions for the general public relative to marina issues, protection from disease transmission, personal safety, and complaint investigation.
