Arthritis
The Arthritis Program receives funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Arthritis Branch to reduce the burden of arthritis in Ohio. The program has developed an Ohio Arthritis Action Plan based on the National Arthritis Action Plan and the Healthy People: 2010 Health Objectives for the Nation. The program is currently addressing three goals:
- Increase public and professional recognition of arthritis and its many forms.
- Increase the availability of, and access to services and educational resources throughout the state.
- Document the impact of arthritis.
These goals are being accomplished through three program components:
- Community-based interventions.
- Media awareness events.
- Arthritis data collected statewide through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and other research initiatives.
The Arthritis Program works closely with the four Ohio Chapters of the Arthritis Foundation to promote expansion of their services and educational resources. Planning assistance is also provided through the Ohio Arthritis Coalition, a membership organization comprised of representatives from statewide and community based organizations.
In Ohio, the Arthritis Program:
- Works with public and private agencies to incorporate arthritis into their services and educational offerings.
- Supports professional education initiatives.
- Promotes arthritis awareness through displays, media productions and distribution of resource materials at statewide conferences and events.
- Publishes periodically data reports relating to arthritis prevalence in Ohio.
- Responds to arthritis inquiries from consumers, public health officials and other health care providers.
- Serves as the link between the Ohio Department of Health and the Arthritis Branch, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia.
