"Be Smart About Your Heart: Control the ABC’s of Diabetes"
"Be Smart About Your Heart: Control the ABC’s of Diabetes" is a communication campaign alerting people with diabetes about their increased risk for heart disease and stroke. It also provides important tips on how to remain healthy by remembering and controlling certain numbers.
- A is for A1c (glucose average)
- B is for Blood Pressure
- C is for Cholesterol (LDL)
Objectives of the Campaign:
- Increase understanding of the link between cardiovascular disease and diabetes
- Promote the ABC’s of diabetes
- Empower people with diabetes to ask questions and partner with health care providers
- Encourage/educate ABC lifestyle behaviors
This campaign is designed with barriers in mind, acknowledging the difficulty in controlling ABC’s but advocating that "real" people do it every day. Components of this program are brochures, special events, ongoing media outreach, journal articles, targeting consumer magazines, generating radio and television news coverage, web strategies, and partnering activities. For information regarding obtaining "Be Smart" brochures contact the National Diabetes Education Program at 1-800-438-5383.
