Diabetes In Youth

The Diabetes in Youth workgroup is a component of the Ohio Diabetes Alliance addressing the specific needs of Ohio’s youth with diabetes. Discussion among professionals of the Alliance has led to the completion of distribution of the school manual developed by The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP). The manual will help to establish the school staff’s role in the care of youth with diabetes. It provides problem-solving suggestions for the management of diabetes in schools, dealing with issues such as administration of medication, student self-management, psychosocial adjustment, and parent-teacher-doctor communications.  The Diabetes in Youth workgroup also desires to develop a training presentation for school nurses to accompany the school manual. In addition, there are plans to develop and promote a standard flow sheet to be used in charts of youth with diabetes to facilitate uniform treatment and assurance of quality of care.
