Zoonotic Diseases Animal Rabies Testing & Case Maps
Animal rabies testing is done by the Ohio Department of Health Laboratory. About 4,000 – 5,000 specimens are tested annually. If you are an agency sending in a rabies specimen, please review specimen submission guidelines so that samples arrive at the laboratory in satisfactory condition for testing. Specimens should be refrigerated, not frozen. Test results are reported to the submitting agency and the local health department. Rabies positive animals are also reported to the Rabies Program.
