Zoonotic Disease Program
Insect Identification Service

Local health departments, hospitals and physicians may send us specimens they believe are an insect, spider or other arthropod of medical or public health significance. The Vector-borne Disease Laboratory will identify them and suggest appropriate measures to eliminate the problem. Private residents should contact their local health departments to submit specimens. This is a free service to Ohioans.

Some examples of items we have received:

  • Spiders, bed bugs, ants, flies, etc.
  • Maggots from wounds.
  • Insects, including maggots, in food prepared at restaurants and fast-food establishments.
  • Worms and other insects from septic systems, water filters, toilets, wells and water treatment plants.
