| National Data
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a source of data from several national surveys of oral health:
- Trends in Oral Health Status: United States, 1988-1994 and 1999-2004, released in April 2007 by the CDC National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), provides the most current trend data on various oral health measures. The data were collected as part of the continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Other information, including data from the National Health Interview Survey, is available through the NCHS Web site.
- The National Oral Health Surveillance System provides a summary of state-reported data on nine measures of oral health.
- The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System provides state and national data on three oral health measures. The most recent oral health data available for Ohio are for 2008.
- The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is a national survey of students in grades nine through 12 that measures the prevalence of behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disease and injury affecting the nation's youth and their loved ones. The most recent Ohio data are for 2007. Oral health-related data include tobacco use (including smokeless tobacco) and how recently students visited the dentist (found in the Preventive Health section).
A searchable oral health database containing descriptions of national and state oral health surveys is offered by the Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Data Resource Center (DRC). A query system is available to view prepared tables or to generate statistical analyses of selected data sets. The DRC is co-sponsored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the CDC, Division of Oral Health.
The Federal Medical Expenditure Panel (FMEP) Survey Chartbook, released in 2007, presents data from the 1996 and 2004 FMEP surveys. Findings are presented on dental visits, expenses, insurance coverage and procedures for children, adults and persons over 65 years of age.
