Radiation Protection Programs

The Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection (BEHRP) regulates the possession, use, handling, storage and disposal of radiation sources in order to maintain the radiation dose as low as reasonably achievable to the general population.

BEHRP Radiation Protection programs are comprised of three program areas, each managed by an individual program administrator. The three programs are Agreement State, X-ray and Radiological Health and Safety. Each area works to serve the mission of Radiation Protection through direct execution of activities. Staff for each area is comprised of health physicists and administrative staff under the direction of a health physics supervisor.

Radioactive Materials
The Radioactive Materials Program functions as the licensing and inspection group for radioactive materials. Health physicists perform both licensing and inspection of radioactive materials as well as response to radiological incidents.

X-ray Program
X-ray has jurisdiction over the radiation-generating devices in Ohio. Devices include X-ray machines, linear accelerators and gauging units. X-ray uses a registration system and performs on-site inspections of facilities such as hospitals, dental offices and industrial radiography.

Radiological Health and Safety
Radiological Health and Safety includes response to nuclear power plant emergencies as well as response to radiological incidents. The program includes oversight and monitoring of the decommissioning activities at federal facilities where radioactive materials were used. This program also answers questions about historical radiological sites in Ohio and performs environmental assessments at chemical sites.

In the event of an emergency or incident involving radioactive material or radiation generating equipment, call the BEHRP's 24-hour emergency number.

The emergency number is (614) 722-7221.
