Education Requirements

General X-ray Machine Operators

General X-ray Machine Operator (GXMO) applicants must complete a GXMO didactic educational program accredited by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) before submitting an initial license application.  Additionally, at least four hours of supervised clinical assignments must be completed before a license is issued.

**Notice for General X-Ray Machine Operator applicants who intend to operate digital equipment**

 

GXMO applicants who operate digital equipment must complete a GXMO didactic educational program and at least one GXMO clinical educational program accredited by ODH.  ODH has approved clinical educational programs for the following clinical training modules: Chest and Abdomen, Extremities, Skull and Sinuses, Spine, Podiatry and Bone Densitometry.

Students currently enrolled in, or who have completed an accredited radiologic technology program may submit a copy of their transcript and a signed affidavit from the program director as proof that one or more of the following competency-based clinical training modules has been met: Chest and Abdomen, Extremities, Skull and Sinuses, Spine, Podiatry, and Bone Densitometry.

 

 

General X-ray Machine Operator Educational Programs

 

Rule 3701-72-03 of the Ohio Adminstrative Code includes a new educational model and curriculum requirement for the GXMO.  ODH has developed a DRAFT "GUIDANCE ON DEVELOPING AN ACCEPTABLE DIDACTIC SYLLABUS" as well as an updated Application for Approval of a General X-ray Machine Operator Educational Program for GXMO educators.  This application may be used to apply for a didactic or clinical educational program.

 

Currently approved GXMO educational providers must submit a copy of their updated didactic curriculum to ODH by Aug. 1, 2008, in order to retain their status as an accredited GXMO didactic educational program.

 

 

Continuing Educational Requirements

 

Any person applying to renew a license shall complete six classroom hours of continuing education courses in radiation safety approved by ODH. Applicants with multiple licenses may use the same six hours of continuing education for the renewal of each license.  NOTE: EFFECTIVE AUG. 1, 2008, THE CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENT WILL INCREASE FROM SIX (6) HOURS TO TWELVE HOURS.

 

You must submit the following as evidence of meeting the continuing education requirements:

  • All licensees that hold a valid certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) may submit their current certification card, specific to your license category, as proof of meeting Ohio's continuing education requirements.

  • All licensees not certified by ARRT must submit a copy or copies of the certificate(s) verifying attendance of six classroom hours (one classroom hour is equivalent to 50 minutes of lecture and attendance) for continuing education courses in radiation safety approved by ODH.
     

-Or-
 

  • All licensees certified by the NMTCB or by ARRT, but are on continuing education probation or on retired status, may submit directed readings approved by American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) or Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) in the subjects relating to radiation safety.
     

ODH accepts continuing education courses already approved by ASRT or the SNM for the subjects and number of classroom hours related to radiation safety.
