Summary of the Radiologic License Rule Amendments

The following changes are effective as of August 2007:

General X-ray Machine Operators (GXMO) Operating Digital Equipment

  • GXMOs are now able to perform standard diagnostic procedures using digital equipment, provided they complete the clinical module(s) specific to the types of procedure(s) they perform.

  • The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has approved clinical educational programs for the following clinical training modules:  Chest and Abdomen, Extremities, Skull and Sinuses, Spine, Podiatry and Bone Densitometry.

List of Accredited GXMO Clinical Educational Programs

  • Students enrolled in or who have graduated from an accredited radiography program may submit a signed affidavit from their program director as proof of meeting one or more of the clinical modules.

  • Currently licensed GXMOs may update their license to include one or more clinical modules completed by going to Apply, Amend, or Renew.  The clinical course certificate of completion or signed affidavit from the radiologic technology program director must be submitted to the Department for approval.

Licenses

  • ODH no longer issues pocket license cards.  Instead, ODH issues an approval letter to licensees.
  • ODH encourages applicants and licensees to verify their status online and encourages licensees to view and print a license certificate from the radiologic license Web site.

Check Application/License Status/Print License

  • ODH encourages employers to verify licensee’s information from the Web site.

License Verification

The following changes will go into effect in August 2008:

General X-ray Machine Operators (GXMO)

  • All new (never previously licensed or expired license) GXMO applicants are required to complete at least one clinical module, specific to the types of procedures they perform.  The completion of the clinical module(s) allows the GXMO to perform standard diagnostic procedures using digital equipment.

Continuing Education (CE)

  •  Any person applying to renew a license shall complete 12 classroom hours of CE specific to the license category held.

Examination

  •  GXMO applicants must submit proof of their GXMO didactic education directly to  Cleveland Clinic in order to take the exam.

  • An applicant may take the state examination up to three times within one year of successful completion of a didactic educational program.  If the individual does not pass the state exam within the one-year period (or fails three times), the individual must retake the didactic education prior to retesting.
