School Health

school busThe Ohio Department of Health School Health Program is committed to making all Ohio children healthy, ready to learn, and prepared to make lifelong healthy choices.  Health plays a major role in the motivation and ability of students to learn.  Ultimately, healthier students are better learners.  Addressing health-related factors such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, chronic illness, and emotional well-being can improve educational as well as health outcomes of students.

A healthy school environment involves parents, students, administration, and staff working together for a common goal.  ODH believes that schools are one part of a comprehensive application to supplement healthy choices for healthy development and success of the child.

The following resources provide a framework for developing a school health environment using the ASCD, Inc. and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model.  Additional resources and tools are available for understanding adolescent risk behavior, school health policies, and the connection between health and academics.
