Tobacco Data and Statistics

The Tobacco Data and Statistics section tracks tobacco use and trend data in Ohio. The data are used to direct Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program goals to prevent and reduce tobacco use in Ohio and the toll tobacco takes regarding disease, death, and health care costs. The Tobacco Program focuses on preventing tobacco use by youth, reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, and reducing tobacco use among high need populations disproportionately affected by the use of tobacco.

Tobacco Program Surveys

Adult Tobacco Survey

The Adult Tobacco Survey(ATS) is managed by the Tobacco program to track state, regional, and local level adult tobacco behavior and trend data. As part of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System(BRFSS), the Adult Tobacco Survey questions are included on split 2 of BRFSS. The full BRFSS survey typically includes ~10,000 respondents; split 2 typically includes a subset of 2,000-3,000 respondents. The Adult Tobacco Survey provides information on the use of tobacco products, exposure to secondhand smoke, exposure to cessation information, public opinion on tobacco policies, and other topics related to the behaviors and burden of tobacco use and exposure in Ohio. The data are collected annually and available by County, Region, and State level. However, data are limited based on sample sizes.

Youth Tobacco Survey

The Ohio Youth Tobacco Survey (OYTS) is a voluntary statewide survey that collects information on tobacco use and risk factors among Ohio teens in grades 6 through 12. The survey has been conducted by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) every other year since 2000, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The OYTS provides critical data for students in grades 6-12 with respect to: prevalence of tobacco use (including the role of emerging products like e-cigarettes and hookah), tobacco cessation, minors' access to tobacco, tobacco-related knowledge and attitudes, exposure to media and advertising, school curriculum, and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. Results of the OYTS enhance our state’s capacity to design, implement, and evaluate the youth component of our Tobacco program.
