Champions of Oral Health

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is pleased to announce that Dr. Vinod Miriyala, BDS, MPH, CAGS, DDS and the Hamilton Local School District have been selected to receive the 2016 James F. Quilty, Jr. Award for Champions of Oral Health.

Dr. Miriyala was recognized for his significant role in establishing two dental clinics in Lawrence County where care can be provided to underserved children. In addition, Dr. Miriyala provides dental care for complex cases requiring general anesthesia at a nearby hospital so that families avoid having to travel to Columbus and Cincinnati. He is an adjunct faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, serving as an educator and mentor to future pediatric dentists. Through his involvement with the Early Childhood Oral Health Program quality improvement initiative, he works with physicians and other health care professionals to teach them how to address the oral health needs of their patients. Dr. Miriyala also serves on the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers Dental Steering Committee.

The Hamilton Local School District (HLSD) serves about 3,300 students in southern Franklin County, many from lower income families. The administration and staff are recognized for their ongoing support of oral health, demonstrating an appreciation for the critical role that surveillance and training for oral health programs play in public health. Since 2006, the HLSD has collaborated with the ODH and Columbus Public Health on several oral health initiatives that have had a local, statewide and national impact on children’s oral health. HLSD has been the training site for the ODH’s open-mouth oral health screening surveys of preschool and school-aged children, and has provided a school-based sealant program to its students. The district has also served as the SBSP training site for staff in Ohio and elsewhere. Their support enables the ODH to sustain two of its three core public health functions: assessing the oral health of Ohio’s children and assurance, making sure that high quality oral health programs are being implemented.
