Mark Your Calendars – The Great American Smokeout

The Ohio Department of Health Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program encourages smokers to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking on November 21st – the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

In many towns and communities nationwide, local volunteers support quitters, publicize this anti-smoking event, and press for laws that control tobacco use and discourage teens from starting.

The Great American Smokeout challenges people to stop using tobacco and helps people know about the many tools they can use to quit and stay quit.

Keep Your Hands Busy Until the Urge to Smoke Passes

Seek Support When Trying to Quit –
Research Shows a Combination of Following Methods are Most Effective:

  • Telephone smoking-cessation hotlines: The Ohio Tobacco Quit Line
  • Stop-smoking groups 
  • Online quit groups 
  • Counseling 
  • Nicotine replacement products 
  • Prescription medicine to lessen cravings 
  • Guide books 
  • Encouragement and support from friends and family members

Using 2 or more of these measures to help you quit smoking works better than using any one of them alone. For example, some people use a prescription medicine along with nicotine replacement. Other people may use as many as 3 or 4 of the methods listed above.

The Ohio Tobacco Quit Line

Learn more about counseling services through the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-Quit Now or 1-800-784-8669. The Quit Line provides personal quit coaching and telephone counseling free of charge to Ohioans who are uninsured, have a Medicaid fee for service plan, are pregnant, or are covered through the Ohio Tobacco Collaborative (a group of companies and insurance carriers which cover their employees or members). Nicotine patches, gum or lozenges are provided for up to four weeks at no charge to eligible participants.

Cessation resources are also available to all Ohioans, regardless of insurance status, by enrolling in the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line.
